“Augusta-Richmond County Journal” Writer’s Workshop

Reese Library Special Collections will be sponsoring a writer’s workshop for the “Augusta-Richmond County Journal” on February 2, 2013 from 11 am to 1 pm.  Dr. Russell Brown, the journal’s editor, will be available to discuss the writer’s guidelines and to offer critique on material written by students, faculty, and the community that might be suitable for inclusion in the publication.

Articles selected for the “Augusta-Richmond County Journal” deal primarily with historical topics relating to Augusta or Richmond County, Georgia from all time periods. This is an excellent opportunity to add professional writing credits to resumes for work or graduate school admission.

Dr. Russell Brown is a respected writer in local history whose works include: “A Flag for the Tenth Immunes,” in the books “Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers: Perspectives on the African American Militia and Volunteers, 1865-1917,” ed. Bruce Glasrud, (2011); “Our Connection with Savannah: History of the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters, 1862-1865,” (2004); “From Greenhouses to Green Jackets: Some History and Personalities of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters,” with Vicki Greene, (2003); “Augusta’s ‘Pet Company’: The Washington Light Artillery of Augusta, Georgia,” (2001); “To the Manner Born: The Life of General William H.T. Walker,” (1994); and “Fallen in Battle: American General Officer Combat Fatalities from 1775,” (1988).

The Augusta-Richmond County History writer’s workshop is also the kick-off event for Reese Library Special Collections to offer extended hours for community users on the first Saturday of every month from 9 to 5 when Reese Library is in operation.

For more information call Special Collections at 706-667-4904 or email: spcoll@aug.edu
Thank you to Lillian Wan for bringing this to the attention of the Georgia Room.

Planning begins on transfer of state archives to University System

ATLANTA — January 2, 2013

A nine-member working group will begin the planning work needed to ultimately transfer control and operation of the Georgia State Archives from the Georgia Secretary of State to the Board of Regents. The transfer requires passage of legislation that Governor Nathan Deal will propose in the 2013 session of the General Assembly.

The group’s purpose is to identify and research the immediate issues related to the transfer and bring these before University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby. The group will focus on the transition issues; long-term planning will be addressed if the transfer is completed.

This marks the first step in the potential transition, following the announcement earlier this fall by Gov. Deal and Secretary of State Brian Kemp to transfer the State Archives to the Board of Regents.

Kemp and Huckaby have met to discuss the next steps and are in full agreement to work closely together to do what is best for the State Archives.

Huckaby said, “Secretary Kemp has expressed his full cooperation and support of this transition effort and we look forward to working with him and his staff on this important part of the process.”

Dr. Tim Hynes, president of Clayton State University, will chair the working group. Other members include:

·       Dianne Cannestra, member, Friends of the Georgia Archives & History

·       Lorene Flanders, library director, University of West Georgia

·       Dr. Toby Graham, deputy university librarian and head of the Hargrett Library, UGA

·       Dr. Catherine Oglesby, professor of history, Valdosta State University

·       Richard Pearce-Moses, professor and director of the archival studies program, Clayton State University

·       Merryll Penson, executive director of Library Services, University System of Georgia

·       Dr. William Potter, university librarian and associate provost, the University of Georgia

·       Dr. Lamar Veatch, executive director of the Georgia Public Library Service

The group’s first meeting will be held in early January.

Thanks to Carol Waggoner-Angelton for forwarding this update to the Georgia Room.
