Upcoming Events at the Reese Library

Here are some upcoming events at ASU, soon to be GRU:

The Martin Luther King Jr. program will be hosted by the Summerville campus of
Georgia Regents University (GRU) on Friday, January 18, at noon in the Maxwell
Performing Arts Theatre.  The featured speaker will be Dr. Louis V. Baldwin of
Vanderbilt University on “Remembering Martin Luther King Jr. in the Age of Obama.”

=”Pride and Passion:  The African-American Baseball Experience,” is an exciting new
travelling exhibition opening at Georgia Regents University’s Reese Library on Friday,
January 18.  It examines the challenges faced by African-American baseball players
as they sought equal opportunities in their sport beginning in the post-Civil War era.January 18, 2013 Friday – Opening Night and Reception at University Hall 170,
Summerville Campus, 5:30 p.m.
Screening of excerpt from Kent Burns’ “Baseball” will examine the early organization of
African-American baseball.  A panel discussion will follow.

Guest speakers will include former Negro American League baseball players Carl Long
and Cliff Layton.  Chris Kane, sports director for WJBF NewsChannel 6, will moderate a
discussion.  A reception and special preview of the exhibition will follow in Reese Library.

February 3, 2013 Sunday – University Hall 170, Summerville Campus, 2 p.m.
Screening of second excerpt from Ken Burns’ “Baseball,” followed by a panel discussion.

Local baseball historians Lamar Garrard and Milledge Murray will discuss the post-
integration era of major league baseball that followed Jackie Robinson’s debut.  Kevin
Faigle, sports director for WRDW News 12, will moderate the discussion.
